6 Key Steps to Writing Great Content

Posting content regularly to your company’s website, such as blog posts or articles, can greatly increase traffic to your website. The more people who come across your content, the more people become exposed to your company. Want to learn how to create valuable content for your website? Follow these six steps:

Step 1: Be Original, Be Clever

The only reason we put up with our grandparents telling us the same joke for the tenth time is that we love them. So, if you are going to discuss the same point as someone else, try to put it in a fresh perspective. Anything else is a waste of time! If you don’t have anything good, start over. You’ll be happy that you did when you come to something fresh.

Furthermore, even if you have a new idea, you will want to make sure it’s a good one. Despite the fact that we loved the Clear Eyes commercials, if you hear Ben Stein’s voice in your head while you’re thinking through your idea, you may want to reconsider killing your readers with boredom.

Step 2: Get Your Facts Straight

Trust is hard to earn and even harder to regain. This is on the level of importance as the ideas in Step 1. If you can’t manage this, then start over. Providing inaccurate information is an all too easy way of losing the trust of your readers. On the flipside, when you are telling the truth, back it up with credible sources. This will cause readers to trust you even more and even cite you as a source (free advertising!).

Step 3: Choose Your Words Wisely

Language is an immeasurably powerful tool: it can influence decisions and clarify ideas. Good ideas with a bad pitch can easily fail (recall Step 1). Similarly, if your idea is not earth-shatteringly profound but is important to your cause, good language can make up for that. In addition, use language that helps direct your reads towards taking action.

We also can’t forget that the words we choose influence how we are found via search engines. If you can, build keywords into phrases that you might expect to be used as a query. This is what will make your content more visible to your potential customers on the web.

Step 4: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

Images and videos are great ways to convey information, but they’re also easy on the eyes. Furthermore, engaging your reader with more than one sense is a great way to keep them interested. Try cool angles, flattering lighting, and intriguing subjects. You can get more creative with photos and videos than you could’ve ever imagined!

Step 5: Create a Dialogue

When a reader shares your content, it’s free advertising. When someone leaves a comment, it shows that they connected with the piece (it is even good if they disagree). Not only can these discussions help foster a community surrounding your content, but they will make it rank higher in search engines, giving you even more exposure. Plus, this is a great way to discover how your followers feel!

Step 6: Follow Through

Don’t be a one-hit wonder. If you follow Steps 1-4, you will produce valuable content. If it sticks with your target audience, they will come back for more. Don’t leave them hanging. Instead, make yourself their reliable source, and watch your following grow.
